Manic Depression Symptoms

If you believe that you or someone you love is suffering from manic depression symptoms, it is important to educate yourself on the disorder; manic depression symptoms are many times easy to recognize, although they share common traits with other disorders. The most common manic depression symptoms are simply severe mood swings, involving extreme periods of highs and lows, sometimes with periods of normal moods between. Manic depression symptoms may appear at any age. However, most manic depression symptoms occur first in young adults. Whatever the age and no matter the severity, manic depression symptoms must be diagnosed accurately and quickly for the benefit and safety of the person who suffers from the illness.

Manic depression symptoms include alterations in mood, energy, activity levels, sleep, appetite, sex drive, and cognition. The most striking symptoms of manic depression is the syndrome of mania, to which a diagnosis is rarely made. The manic depression symptom of mania is characterized by euphoria or irritability. In addition, patients with mania tend to have a mood that is easily changed - they are easily moved to anger, tears, or laughter, sometimes very rapidly following one another. Another manic depression symptom are delusions. For example, a person may believe they are a prophet or messiah. Also, a person experiencing mania will be extremely energetic, overactive, hypersexual, impulsive, and will need very little sleep. Their speech will be rapid and they will fly from idea to idea.

The depressive phase shows different manic depression symptoms. It is characterized by low mood and decreased energy. Lack of interest and activity, increased sleep, and delusions are also manic depression symptoms of the depressive phase.

Some people that suffer from manic depression symptoms have only mild mood swings and never experience extreme or psychotic symptoms. These individuals are said to have cyclothymia, which may be a mild, genetically related form of manic depression. Other people that suffer from manic depression symptoms may experience alternating but opposite syndromes of mania and depression, that is having mixed symptoms of mania either at the same time or the same day. This is called "mixed mania".

With almost all cases of manic depression, drug or alcohol abuse is involved as a sort of self-medication. This can be devastating or even fatal, as alcohol and drug self-medication only will make the manic depression symptoms more severe and may even eliminate the periods of "normalcy" experienced by forcing swings from mania to depression.
